The country’s new national cancer tissue resource, onCore UK, has appointed Morgan Cole Solicitors as its legal adviser, further strengthening the firm’s UK-wide health sector credentials.
onCore UK is a new organisation set up as a collaboration by the UK’s largest governmental and nongovernmental agencies in the fight against cancer – the Department of Health (England), the Medical Research Council and Cancer Research UK.
onCore UK has one main aim: to create and run a national biosample resource, where tissue and blood samples from cancer patients can be collected, stored and made available to cancer researchers on a scale unprecedented in the UK.
Morgan Cole’s legal team was led by Oxford-based Partner Gayle Curry and also comprised Partners Alison Patten-Hall and Judith Maunder.
Gayle Curry said, “onCore UK is a great addition to our portfolio of health clients and offers us an exciting opportunity to expand our advice and guidance in this leading-edge segment of the health sector.”
“We are delighted that our team was recognised for already providing the experienced, in-depth and focused commercial and regulatory advice required by onCore UK at what is clearly an important time for the organisation.”
onCore UK will create the means by which samples are widely collected and recorded to standard protocols where information about the donors is routinely recorded in support of the samples and where samples can realistically be shared throughout the country.
At the same time onCore UK will lead the way in harmonising these standards across other UK cancer biobanks through the creation of a Confederation of Cancer Biobanks and by working closely with ethics and regulatory authorities and with patient representative groups
Dr Brian Clark, Chief Executive Officer of onCore said “onCore UK is working in an evolving and sensitive field to provide a quality service that can be relied upon and trusted by patients, healthcare workers, researchers, funders of research, regulators and the many other stakeholders involved in human biosample based cancer research. Expert legal advice is essential for onCore UK to operate its services appropriately and we believe that, in Morgan Cole, we have external legal advisers with a wealth of relevant experience to support this charity achieve its goals and make a valuable contribution to cancer research for the benefit of patients. We are delighted to engage their services.”
