East wind blows no good...for the West!
The annual golf day, jointly organised by CEW and our Peter Allbrook, sees members of the South West Wales CEW Club take on members from the South East Wales CEW Club. There was a good turn-out for this years golf day with attendees from the construction industry including Morrison Construction, Stradform, Costain, RCT Homes, Eastlake Group, Enterprise Consulting and White Young Green.
The golf day was blessed with near perfect conditions - scorching weather, the stunning scenery of the Lakes Course at the Vale and not a hard hat in sight! The match was very close at times. Our David Hudson and Steve Blake of Bank of Scotland Corporate found the competitive edge on the back nine to keep the West’s score in the black. Byron Flynn of Speedy Hire for the East, taking the controls late on in his game against Peter Allbrook and Steve Williams of Bank of Scotland Corporate despite losing his playing partner to a delay event. However, it was the East who found a second wind and, making the most of the ‘home’ advantage, took the Cup with a winning stableford score of 335 versus a respectable 300.
There were individual honours for John Griffiths and Darren Wright of Costain and Brian Kemp and Peter Crabtree also of Costain, who won 1st & 2nd prize respectively in the 'highest scoring pair' awards. The Happy Gilmore prize for ‘longest drive’ went to Mark Tyrell of Morrison Construction despite suspicions of foul play (was it his first or second ball!!). Andrew Young of Young Brothers, sponsored by Specsavers, picked up the ‘nearest the pin’ prize for his tee shot onto the 8th which finished 12 feet shy of the hole.
With one win each, that leaves matters decidedly well balanced for next year’s golf day.
