Green-fingered volunteers create raised beds for community school

In February 2010 a local primary school, Oxford Road Community School, sent a call for help to Connect Reading askinOxford Rd School gardeningg for volunteers to help them with a food growing programme. Volunteers were needed to create a raised bed and other gardening tasks at the primary school. A group of 11 willing volunteers from Morgan Cole offered to help.

Over the course of a day, five volunteers used their carpentry skills to construct the beds, whilst the remaining six cleared the site for the beds to be put in place.

After a few hours, the results were remarkable. Rob White from Food4Families who requested volunteers said: "Thanks to all of you for your wonderful help at the weekend. It was much appreciated by the school and myself."

Food4Families is a ground-breaking project aiming to create a new network of food growing gardens at sites across Reading.
