Lawyers hit rugby stars for six in charity cricket battle

Britain's leading rugby charity has been bowled over by a Cardiff charity cricket night which saw a team of 'legal eagles'Charity Cricket Match topple opponents from the world of Welsh rugby.

The Wooden Spoon Society - the children's charity of world rugby - is £1,500 better off after top South Wales solicitors Morgan Cole took on and defeated a Charity XI at the SWALEC Stadium, home of the first Ashes test next month.

More than 300 guests of Morgan Cole were at the event, which combined the firm's annual summer garden party with a charity fundraiser.

The charity team included former British Lion Gwyn Evans and ex-Welsh internationals Gareth Wyatt and Geraint Lewis and was augmented by team members whose employers had given a £150 donation in return for a place.

Morgan Cole Solicitors Partner Philip Jardine said, "The Morgan Cole summer garden party has become one of the most popular events on the business calendar for friends of the firm.

"We are also a firm supporter of Glamorgan Cricket Club, being the headline sponsor of the impressive Morgan Cole lounge. We thought that we'd bring both these elements together and help put on a fun cricket match to help Wooden Spoon.

"It was also a real privilege for so many of our lawyers and the opposition to play on a ground that will host an Ashes Test.

"And any suggestions that we bolstered our team with non-Morgan Cole lawyers to help give us an advantage will be met with the full force of our legal might!" added Mr Jardine.

For 25 years Wooden Spoon has harnessed the spirit and values of rugby to give disadvantaged children in Britain and Ireland a chance to achieve their full potential in life.

Over this time more than 350 projects have been supported with more than £15m given in grants to national and local projects.

Brinley Groves, Chairman of Wales Wooden Spoon, said, "It was a great night with a fabulous turn-out for Morgan Cole, a firm with a long tradition of supporting worthy causes.

"It was en evenly fought match, with both teams featuring some very talented cricketers. Let's hope England have better luck on this ground next month than our lads!"
