A pioneering bill which would allow authorities to cut off internet access to people downloading illegally has been approved by the lower house of parliament in France.
The music and film industries have taken much interest in the bill, as piracy has severely limited their official revenues.
The bill had already been approved by the Senate in July. Before it becomes law, it must gain approval from a small committee from both houses of parliament.
Pirates who ignore email warnings and a registered letter about downloading material from the internet could have their internet connection cut for up to a year.
Penalties could also include fines of up to £265,000 or being sent to prison.
